From Director’s Desk

As the Director of CSB-CSGRC, a pivotal institution within the Central Silk Board, I am honored to oversee the vital mission of collection, characterisation, conservation and utilization of mulberry and silkworm genetic resources.

Ours is a distinctive center in India, boasting the most extensive collections of mulberry and silkworm germplasm, that is crucial for the sustainable advancement of sericulture.

Established in 1990, the Central Sericultural Germplasm Resources Centre (CSGRC) stands as a premier facility under the Central Silk Board, dedicated to the conservation and utilization of sericultural biodiversity nationwide. It is recognized as a National Active Germplasm Site by the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) in New Delhi for mulberry and the National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR) in Bengaluru for silkworm.

The activity of this centre covers various aspects of conservation of mulberry and silkworm genetic resources implementing research projects which are crucial for characterization and evaluation of the available resources. Over the years, the center has undertaken extensive surveys and explorations, resulting in the collection of 1317 mulberry accessions and 489 silkworm accessions for systematic preservation. Our commitment to preserving mulberry and silkworm genetic diversity has become even more critical in the face of climate change.

Building upon our three decades of expertise, our research continues to focus on identifying duplicate accessions within our collections, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficacy of our conservation endeavours. The collective knowledge amassed through our efforts will undoubtedly contribute to the development of the sericulture industry. I invite you to partner with us in our consorted efforts to conserve seribiodiversity.

The information shared on this website reflects the diligence, dedication, and teamwork of our scientists, technicians, administrative personnel, and supporting staff. We encourage you to explore our site and discover the invaluable contributions of our center to the sustainable growth of the sericulture industry.
