Silkworm Division

Presently, the Silkworm Division is maintaining 489 silkworm genetic resources in the gene bank comprising 83 multivoltine accessions (indigenous-73 & exotic-10), 383 bivoltine accessions (indigenous-223 & exotic-160) and 23 mutants (exotic) collected from 9 states of the country and 14 countries across the world.

Activities:

  • Collection of new silkworm genetic resources through R&D institutes.
  • Quarantine rearing and introduction of new silkworm genetic resources into the germplasm bank.
  • Registration of silkworm genetic resources with ICAR-NBAIR.
  • Systematic rearing and conservation of silkworm genetic resources as per standard operating procedures.
  • Morphological characterization of the silkworm genetic resources as per catalogue data.
  • Evaluation of the silkworm genetic resources and entry of evaluation data into Silkworm Germplasm Information System (SGIS) database.
  • Digitization of silkworm database.
  • Conduct research on silkworm germplasm characterization for their conservation and enhanced utilization.
